A COUNCIL RESOLUTION concerning
title
National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week - November 10th  to 18th

FOR the purpose of  proclaiming November 10-18, 2012 as National Hunger and Homeless Awareness Week and encouraging all citizens to recognize that many people do not have housing and need support from citizens, and private or public nonprofit service entities.
body

WHEREAS, for the past several years the National Coalition for the Homeless and National Student Campaign Against Hunger and Homelessness have sponsored National Hunger and Homeless Awareness Week.

WHEREAS, the purpose of this week is to educate the public about the many reasons people are hungry and homeless, including the shortage of affordable housing in Baltimore for very low income residents; and to encourage support for homeless assistance service providers as well as community service opportunities for students and school service organizations.

WHEREAS, there are many organizations committed to sheltering, providing supportive services as well as meals and food supplies to the homeless including the Helping Up Mission, Project PLASE, Health Care for the Homeless, and the Homeless Services Program in the Mayor's Office of Human Services.

WHEREAS, the Council recognizes that hunger and homelessness continues to be a serious problem for many individuals and families in Baltimore.

WHEREAS, the intent of National Hunger and Homeless Awareness Week is consistent with the activities of the Homeless Services Program in the Mayor's Office of Human Services and The Journey Home campaign, Baltimore City's plan to make homelessness a rare and brief experience in our community.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF BALTIMORE, that the Council hereby proclaims November 10-18, 2012 as National Hunger and Homeless Awareness Week and encourages all citizens to recognize that many people do not have housing and need support from citizens, and private or public nonprofit service entities.

AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be sent to the Health Commissioner, the Mayor, and the Mayor's Legislative Liaison to the City Council.
