FOR the purpose of calling for passage and enactment of House Bill 1285 (Baltimore City Board of School Commissioners - Appointment of Members) to restore local control of Baltimore's Board of School Commissioners.

Recitals

Under the current governance structure, there is no elected official who is completely accountable for the success (or failure) of our school system. The current shared governance structure needs to be fixed to ensure greater accountability.

House Bill 1285, if passed and enacted, will provide for the appointment of the Board of School Commissioners, by the Mayor of Baltimore City, with the advice and consent of the Baltimore City Council. This ensures that the prospective Commissioners are properly vetted at the local level.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF BALTIMORE, That the Council calls for passage and enactment of House Bill 1285 (Baltimore City Board of School Commissioners Appointment of Members) to restore local control of Baltimore?s Board of School Commissioners.

AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be sent to the Governor, the Honorable Chairs and Members of the Baltimore City House and Senate Delegations to the Maryland General Assembly, the President of the Maryl...
