Today marks the 24th day of the federal government shutdown, making it the longest federal shutdown in American history. This past Friday, furloughed federal employees and contractors missed a paycheck and have no idea when or if they will receive another. In addition, countless small businesses that cater to the federal government and its employees have been adversely affected.
Baltimore City has a large number of residents who are federal employees and contractors who have been impacted by this unnecessary shutdown. This shutdown has already done incalculable harm to our friends and neighbors who rely on the federal government for their livelihoods, and this is a critical time during which we all need to stand together with them.
Now, therefore, be it resolved by the City Council of Baltimore, That, in light of the on-going federal shutdown, the Baltimore City Council calls on all Baltimore City landlords and utility companies to extend a grace period for the duration of the federal government shutdown to all furloughed federal employees and contractors and forbear any adverse action against them until the shutdown’s conclusion.
And be it further resolved, That a copy of this Resolution be sent to the President and Chief Executive Officer of Baltimore Gas and Electric, the Executive Director of the Maryland Multi-Housing Association, Inc., the Mayor, and the Mayor’s Legislative Liaison to the City Council.
