National Donate Life Month is celebrated every April.  During April, Americans are encouraged to register as organ, eye, and tissue donors.  Kidney donations are desperately needed.  The average wait time for a kidney donation from a deceased donor is 3-5 years.  One healthy kidney can save a person with two diseased kidneys from remaining on dialysis for the rest of his or her life.  Compared to dialysis, kidney donation is associated with a better quality of life, lower risk of death, fewer dietary restrictions, and lower treatment costs.  Both the deceased and the living can donate a kidney to those in need.  Living kidney donors are frequently family members of someone in need, but non-family members can also donate.  If one chooses to be an organ donor, he or she can save up to 8 lives once they die, including the life of someone in need of a kidney donation.

Now, therefore, be it resolved by the City Council of Baltimore, That the Baltimore City Council recognizes April as National Kidney Donation Awareness Month.

And be it further resolved, That a copy of this Resolution be sent to the Mayor, the Health Commissioner, and the Mayor’s Legislative Liaison to the City Council.
