Request for State Action - Allow Our Sheriffs to Collectively Bargain
For the purpose of calling on the Maryland General Assembly to pass, and the Governor to sign Senate Bill 823, which would extend to the offices of the Baltimore City Sheriff the basic and fundamental right to collectively bargain wages and working conditions.

Recitals
For decades, collective bargaining, the process by which groups of employees negotiate with management to secure fair wages and benefits such as health care, safety protections, and pensions, has bolstered the livelihood of millions of American families.
Presently, many of Baltimore City’s public safety employees enjoy the basic right to collectively bargain with management. The State and the City have recognized that these employees play a critical role in the safety and security of the people of Baltimore and deserve to have the ability to collectively bargain for a fair wage, just benefits, and better working conditions.
Our sheriffs should be treated no differently. Charged with the responsibility of keeping our courthouses safe and serving warrants, among other duties, they are deserving of this basic right in order to secure their livelihood and that of their families.
Now, therefore, be it resolved by the City Council of Baltimore, That the Council calls on the Maryland General Assembly to pass, and the Governor to sign Senate Bill 823, which would extend to the offices of the Baltimore City Sheriff the basic and fundamental right to collectively bargain wages and working conditions.
And be it further resolved, That a copy of this Resolution be sent to the Honorable
Chairs and Members of the Baltimore City House and Senate Delegations to the Maryland General Assembly and the Mayor’s Legislative Liaison to the City Council.
