Recitals
Dante Barksdale, a longtime anti-gun violence activist, was known as the “heart and soul” of Safe Streets Baltimore, an evidence-based, public health campaign that seeks to reduce gun violence and homicides in Baltimore City. Mr. Barksdale spent countless hours as a Safe Street Outreach Coordinator serving members of the community in close proximity to the City property specified in this Ordinance. As such, this Ordinance is to rename this location in honor of Mr. Barksdale, who tragically lost his life on January 17, 2021, to honor of his memory and dedication to the community that he once served.
Section 1. Be it ordained by the Mayor and City Council of Baltimore, That the City property, located at Ward 6, Section 9, Block 1318, Lot 2 (also known as 199 North Caroline Street), is named Dante Barksdale Square.
Section 2. And be it further ordained, That this Ordinance takes effect on the 30th day after the date it is enacted.
