May is Older Americans Month.  During this month, we recognize the contributions of older Americans across the nation.  Today over 66 million Americans are over the age of 65, and Americans are living longer and healthier lives than ever before.  The 2019 theme of Older Americans Month is Connect, Create, and Contribute.  The theme encourages all older adults and their communities to connect with people and services that support participation; create by engaging in activities that promote learning, health, and personal enrichment; and contribute time, talent, and life experience to benefit others.  By connecting with their communities, older adults can prevent loneliness and can offer wisdom to younger members of the community.  Through creation, older adults can sharpen their skills, as well as learn new skills and teach younger community members new skills.  Older adults contribute every day to their communities, whether through volunteering at schools, mentoring students, helping raise children, or transmitting their knowledge, before they retire, to younger workers.  The Baltimore City Council thanks older Americans for all that they do, and recognizes May as Older Americans Month.

Now, therefore, be it resolved by the City Council of Baltimore, That May is declared Older Americans Month.

And be it further resolved, That a copy of this Resolution be sent to the Health Department’s Deputy Commissioner of the Division of Aging, the Mayor, and the Mayor’s Legislative Liaison to the City Council.
