Title
A Salute to Barbaro - A Statue in His Honor
FOR the purpose of requesting that a statue of Barbaro be erected near the Pimlico Race Track, in honor of his achievements as a race horse and for being a model to us all by showing that we should strive to have the courage to fight to the finish, never give up, and work to leave our mark in whatever we may try and achieve.

On January 29, 2007, the sports world lost a true hero when Barbaro, the extraordinary 4-year old colt, was euthanized after an 8-month battle for life due to a tragic accident at last year's Preakness at Pimlico. Barbaro was not simply a race horse; he was an exceptional athlete who won every race he finished. Barbaro was an animal who loved winning. He gave his all to place himself in the winners circle and was willing to do whatever it took to get himself there.
Even after his injury, Barbaro showed strength and determination. In a situation where most horses quickly give up, Barbaro fought for every moment of life. He not only fought for his own survival but gave each and everyone of us hopes for our own survival and a better future. Barbaro did not simply achieve on the racetrack; rather, he achieved his fame and status through sheer will, guts, determination and a never say die attitude.
We can all learn much from Barbaro's historic achievements. We can learn to never give up, even in the face of dire situations and to give our all to achieve our goals. By erecting a monument to the horse that refused to give up, we can all be reminded that there are important things in our lives worth fighting for and that when we put our minds to achieving goals, we can all accomplish those goals and leave our everlasting mark on the world in which we live.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF BALTIMORE, That this Body requests that a statue of Barbaro be erected near the Pimlico Race Track, in honor of his achievements as a race horse and for being a model to us all by showing that we should strive to have the courage to fight to the finish, never give up, and work to leave our mark in whatever we may try and achieve.
AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be sent to the Mayor, the Director of the Department of Recreation and Parks, and the Mayor's Legislative Liaison to the Baltimore City Council.
