A COUNCIL RESOLUTION concerning
Title
Submission of an Application to Preserve America to Support War of 1812 Bicentennial Planning
FOR the purpose of supporting the submission of a grant application to Preserve America for funds to support planning for the bicentennial of the War of 1812.
Body
WHEREAS, Preserve America is a White House initiative developed in cooperation with the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation, the U.S. Department of the Interior, and the U.S. Department of Commerce; and
WHEREAS, The goals of this initiative include a greater shared knowledge about our Nation's past, strengthened regional identities and local pride, increased local participation in preserving the country's irreplaceable cultural and natural heritage assets, and support for the economic vitality of communities; and
WHEREAS, The Preserve America grant program can assist Baltimore's interests and goals related to historic preservation; and
WHEREAS, The bicentennial of the War of 1812 is fast approaching, and Baltimore, the birthplace of the Star-Spangled Banner, is central to the telling of the national heritage story of America's second war for independence.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF BALTIMORE, That the City Council hereby supports the grant application for Preserve America funds to assist the development of a plan for cultural heritage resource protection, tourism product development and marketing, educational and celebratory programming, and a lasting legacy to the national heritage story of the War of 1812 in Baltimore.
