Title
Celebrating National Women's History Month In Baltimore
FOR the purpose of celebrating National Women's History Month by paying homage to the women in our lives, recognizing their many accomplishments and selfless devotion that have helped build our communities, as well as our dreams, and honoring the spirit of possibility and hope set in motion by generations of women who brought our communities together and restored hope in the face of impossible odds.

The public celebration of women's history in this country began in 1978 as "Women's History Week" in Sonoma County, California. In 1981, Senator Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) and Representative Barbara Mikulski (D-Md.) co-sponsored a joint Congressional resolution proclaiming a national Women's History Week. In 1987, Congress expanded the celebration to a month, and March was declared National Women's History Month.
In honor of National Women's History Month, the City of Baltimore, the Baltimore Area Convention and Visitors Association, and the Greater Baltimore Cultural Alliance will welcome visitors to cultural heritage exhibits and special events In Celebration of Women. In Celebration of Women is a city-wide initiative created to highlight Baltimore as a destination rich in women's art, history, and contributions.
This program will bring together Baltimore's Walters Art Museum and the Contemporary Museum for an exhibition of works based on the female form by renowned sculptor Louise Bourgeois, as well as the Baltimore Museum of Art's "Feast, Famine & the Female Form," guided tours that use paintings and sculptures to demonstrate the different ideals of feminine beauty throughout history and across cultures, Sports Legends at Camden Yards display of women in sports, and the American Visionary Art Museum exhibit entitled "Race, Class, Gender ? Character". The Baltimore Area Convention and Visitors Association website, www.Baltimore.org, will feature discounts and special offers to exhibits and events as well as a detailed calendar highlighting information that is beneficial when planning a trip to Baltimore. Various area businesses will also be featured on the site, offering discounts and specials throughout the month.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF BALTIMORE, That this Body celebrates Women's History Month by paying homage to the women in our lives, recognizing their many accomplishments and selfless devotion that have helped build our communities, as well as our dreams, and honoring the spirit of possibility and hope set in motion by generations of women who brought our communities together and restored hope in the face of impossible odds.
AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be sent to the Mayor and the Mayor's Legislative Liaison the Council.
