A COUNCIL RESOLUTION concerning
title
Celebrating the Naming of the William Donald Schaefer Auditorium

FOR the purpose of celebrating and praising the naming of the auditorium at Baltimore City College Castle On The Hill as the William Donald Schaefer Auditorium.
body
WHEREAS, Baltimore City Mayor Sheila A. Dixon has officially endorsed the formal naming of the Baltimore City College Castle On The Hill's auditorium in order to identify the venue as the William Donald Schaefer Auditorium.  Dixon characterized the naming as a thoughtful and appropriate action to recognize the Honorable William Donald Schaefer, Baltimore City College Class of 1939 and Hall of Fame member, in the year of his 70th reunion celebration, as well as an apt commemoration for the decades-long career of an outstanding public servant and his dedication to the City of Baltimore and the State of Maryland.

WHEREAS, The Alumni Association and officers of the Baltimore City College have an equally as important reason for tangibly commemorating William Donald Schaefer.  William Donald Schaefer or "Wild Man", as he was nicknamed in the yearbook for his class of 1939, has always been a force to preserve the academic integrity and achievement tradition of the Baltimore City College as well as the existence of his beloved alma mater's Castle On The Hill.

WHEREAS, William Donald Schaefer Auditorium in the Castle On The Hill establishes the first venue recognition in a City of Baltimore owned building for Schaefer who is a former Baltimore City Council member and president, Mayor of Baltimore, and Governor and Comptroller of Maryland.  For venue identification at the William Donald Schaefer Auditorium, as one of its 60th reunion class gifts, the Baltimore City College Class of 1949 has provided architectural prismatic lettering on the wall between and above the two center-front entrances to the facility.  The venue identification is placed just beneath the carved wood, black and gold leaf City Forever threshold banner.

WHEREAS, Official announcement of the naming of the William Donald Schaefer Auditorium will occur at the Baltimore City College Hall of Fame induction on October 23, 2009.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF BALTIMORE, That the City Council praises and celebrates the naming of the Baltimore City College Castle On The Hill's auditorium as the William Donald Schaefer Auditorium.

AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be sent to Mr. Neil R. Bernstein, City College Class of 1954; to Carla Hopkins, City College Class of 1983, president, Baltimore City College Alumni Association; to David S. Cordish, City College Class of 1956 and Hall of Fame member; and to the Honorable William Donald Schaefer, "Wild Man", City College Class of 1939.
