                     Recitals

The Baltimore Jewish Council was established in 1939, as the community relations arm of the Associated Jewish Community Federation of Baltimore.  The Baltimore Jewish Council works closely with local, state, and federal authorities, as well as other ethnic and faith groups, to build strong partnerships that support the interests of the Jewish community.

The mission of the Baltimore Jewish Council is to advocate at all levels of government the protection and promotion of the Associated Jewish Community Federation of Baltimore, its agencies, and the Greater Baltimore Jewish Community.  This includes the building of strategic support and procurement of necessary government funding for programs, services, and activities that maintain and enhance the interests and security of the Greater Baltimore Jewish Community; maintaining, through education and advocacy, strong support for the State of Israel and its right to exist in peace and security; supporting freedom and human rights for World Jewry and other oppressed peoples; holocaust remembrance and education; and continuing the struggle for civil rights, civil liberties, and social justice while battling against anti-Semitism, bigotry, and prejudice of all kinds.

Through subgroups such as the Holocaust Remembrance Commission, programs are developed and offered to area schools and religious and civic organizations to educate others about the horrors of the Holocaust.  Such programs include providing speakers to schools, producing films, and conducting writing contests.  Other subgroups, such as the Governmental Relations Commission and the Israel Awareness and Advocacy Commission, educate governmental leaders and staff on issues of importance to the Baltimore Jewish community and advocate for them, as well as help maintain public support for the state of Israel.

With the financial support and generous funding from the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation, the Baltimore Jewish Council is able to organize a trip for local civic leader to Israel, in order for them to be able to experience Israel firsthand, as well as to be educated on issues of paramount importance to the Jewish state.  Thanks to the support of these organizations, the City of Baltimore is able to not only be the epitome of diversity, but is able to further the development of community that these organizations and foundations work tirelessly to achieve.  With the help of these organizations and the programs they provide, Baltimore has become a beacon of education and positive partnerships.  We can all learn by following their example of leadership and dedication, and hopefully be able to follow their lead and make Baltimore the best city that it can be.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF BALTIMORE, That this Body offers congratulations and thanks to the Baltimore Jewish Council, the Associated Jewish Community Federation of Baltimore, and the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation for their continued additions to the diversity and education of Baltimore City, for representing the Greater Baltimore Jewish population in matters pertaining to the social, political and humanitarian fabric of the community, and for providing appropriate forums of response by developing policies for actions through careful advocacy and education.

AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be sent to the Mayor, the Baltimore Jewish Council, the Associated Jewish Community Federation of Baltimore, the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation, and the Mayor's Legislative Liaison to the Council.
