CITY OF BALTIMORE
COUNCIL BILL R
(Resolution)
Introduced by: Councilmember Cole
A RESOLUTION ENTITLED
A COUNCIL RESOLUTION concerning
title
Informational Hearing - Over-used Parks - Enhanced Maintenance to Prevent/Repair Damage
FOR the purpose of inviting the Director of the Department of Recreation and Parks to a City Council hearing to explore suggestions, ideas, or plans to prevent damage from occurring or to repair damage that has been done to those parks that are over-used for events.

Each year four parks in Baltimore City significantly increase usage for events, including weddings and other private celebrations, community events, and city-wide events. The increased usage causes damage that normal park maintenance cannot address.
Parks such as Druid Hill Park, Patterson Park, Federal Hill Park, and Mt. Vernon Place are heavily utilized throughout the year for many special events. Federal Hill Park, for example, has already surpassed its highest annual usage ever with four months remaining in the calendar year.
While we want to encourage outdoor events in Baltimore, we must also invest in keeping our parks in good condition and repairing the damage caused by overutilization. We commend the Department of Recreation and Parks for their general park maintenance. The requested hearing is meant to explore additional maintenance for those parks with a level of use that is destructive.
The purpose of this hearing is to insure that our over-used parks remain in good condition so that they can continue to host a large number of events.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF BALTIMORE, That the Director of the Department of Recreation and Parks is invited to brief the Council on suggestions, ideas, or plans to prevent damage from occurring or to repair damage that has been done to those parks that are over-used for events.
AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be sent to the Mayor, the Director of the Department of Recreation and Parks, and the Mayor's Legislative Liaison to the City Council.
