Informational Hearing - Baltimore Education Network (BEN)

FOR the purpose of inviting the Board of Directors of the Baltimore Education Network to share with the City Council the history of BEN's work in supporting families, youth, and the community in creating and implementing an agenda for improving schools in the Baltimore City Public School System.

The Baltimore Education Network (BEN) was established, in 1997, by parents and education advocates to keep the community informed on the progress of implementation of the settlement that had been reached in a lawsuit brought on behalf of a large percentage of the 102,000 children in the Baltimore City public school system that were falling short of meeting Maryland State and community standards for academic achievement.

During that time, BEN, then known as the Baltimore Education Policy Network, and its sponsoring organizations, the Greater Baltimore Urban League, the Baltimore City Council of PTAs, the Citizens Planning and Housing Association, the Fund for Educational Excellence, the Maryland Education Coalition, and others on the steering committee, formulated BEN's mission of partnering students, families, youth, and the community with educators, to determine the educational future of students in the public school system.
