Winfield, Director, Baltimore City Department of Public Works for his many years of exemplary service to the citizens of Baltimore and expressing sympathy to his loving family, loyal friends, and dedicated colleagues on the sad occasion of his untimely passing.

On December 2, 2007, Baltimore City was saddened by the news of the passing of George L. Winfield, the Director of the Department of Public Works who served at the helm under two mayors, in a leadership remarkable for its steadfast service to the citizens of Baltimore through all seasons - from the blinding snowstorms of winter, to the sweltering days of summer.

George Winfield quietly and honorably led the 3,500 employees of the City's largest department through trying times brought on by budgetary constraints from the inside and massive snowstorms, crippling droughts, and broken water mains from the outside, all the while collecting the City's garbage, cleaning streets and alleys, removing and treating waste water, maintaining fleets of vehicles, and providing clean dri...
