But Johnny Unitas' efforts alone did not take the Colts to victory; he was part of a team, and one of those Colts' outstanding team players was Lenny Moore.  According to information from the Pro Football Hall of Fame, for almost a decade, starting in the late 1950's, the Baltimore Colts were one of the National Football League's premier teams, and flanker/halfback Lenny Moore was a major reason for the team's successes.  First used as a combination flanker and running back, his primary responsibility was to catch passes.  Teaming with quarterback Johnny Unitas, the two formed a great pass-catch combo that devastated the opposition for almost a dozen years.

Lennie Moore's football career was exceptional.  In 1956, he was the NFL Rookie of the Year.  In 1958, Moore's third season, the Colts marched to the NFL championship, and Moore played a leading role, contributing 1,638 combined net yards and 14 touchdowns.  In the Colts' overtime victory over the New York Giants, in the title game, he grabbed 5 passes for 99 yards.

Following that season, he continued his football accomplishments.  He earned first-team All-Pro honors, something he would do again in 1959, 1960, 1961, and 1964.  From 1963 to 1965, he scored touchdowns in 18 consecutive games, an NFL record.  In 1964, he was NFL Player of the Year and also Comeback Player of the Year, recovering from injuries sustained in the previous two seasons, to score 20 touchdowns and to lead the Colts to a division title.  When he retired following the 1967 season, he left behind some amazing statistics: 12, 451 combined net yards, 5,174 yards rushing, 363 pass receptions, and 113 touchdowns.  In 1975, he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Lenny Moore is now 79 years old.  It's time to pay tribute to one of the NFL's greatest football players of all time and whose efforts, on behalf of the Baltimore Colts, helped make them a great championship team.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF BALTIMORE, That this Body encourages efforts to honor Lenny Moore, one of the NFL's greatest players who was key to many victories for the championship Baltimore Colts, by placing a statue that would accompany another statue already placed, which honors one of the NFL's greatest players of the championship Baltimore Colts, Johnny Unitas.

AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be sent to the Maryland Stadium Authority and to the Mayor's Legislative Liaison to the Baltimore City Council.
