Recitals

On March 15th, the City College and Edmondson-Westside High School boys’ basketball teams earned Baltimore it’s 35th and 36th state championships since Baltimore joined the state athletic association 21 years ago.  Both teams capped impressive runs in doing so and have made Baltimore very proud.

The Edmondson-Westside High School (EWHS) Red Storm successfully defended their Class 1A title from last year by defeating Allegany 54-51.  Led by coach Darnell Dantzler, the Red Storm ended the season on a 7 game winning streak to bring EWHS it’s second state crown.  In the title game, EWHS recorded a true team win, with contributions from 10 players, to hand Allegany its second loss of the year.  Seniors Sean Burke and Josh Garrett each scored in double figures to lead the scoring in the championship match.

The City College Black Knights rode an even longer win streak to the school’s 3rd State title, capping an undefeated 27-0 season by taking the Class 3A crown to go with their Baltimore City championship.  The Black Knights came back from a 2 point deficit with 8 minutes left in their season by outscoring opponent Westlake 18 to 5 in the 4th quarter of the championship game to seal a 59-48 victory.  Coach Daryl Wade’s City squad was paced by 44 combined points from starers Timmy Bond, Omari George, and Kamau Stokes, all seniors, in the title bout.

These accomplishments reflect well not only on the EWHS and City College teams, but on the state of basketball in Baltimore as a whole.  In reported post-game comments both coaches were quick to praise how the quality of competition that they face in the Baltimore City league prepared them for their title runs.  “It’s a dogfight in Baltimore City,” Danztler said. “Every game – City, Digital Harbor, Dunbar, Lake Clifton, Edmondson –  just the daily grind of Baltimore City basketball.  It prepares you for this.” City College Coach Daryl Wade agreed, saying “I’ve always said the Baltimore City league is one of the toughest conferences around; we go at it tooth and nail, day in, day out.  Those tests early helped us get through the playoffs.  When we come together and play at the city championship at Morgan, it’s a great environment to learn from.  The state then isn’t too big.  You lose those jitters when you get here.  It’s like you’ve been here before.”

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF BALTIMORE, That the Council congratulates the Edmondson-Westside High School Red Storm and the City College Black Knights boys basketball teams on their tremendously successful state championship seasons.

AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be sent to the Mayor, the coach and players of the Edmondson-Westside High School boys basketball team, the coach and players of the City College Boys Basketball team, the CEO of Baltimore City Public Schools, and the Mayor’s Legislative Liaison to the City Council.
