FOR the purpose of joining in the worldwide celebration of Earth Day on April 22, 2015, pledging the Council's support to all citizens and groups charged with the management of natural resources and education promoting environmental understanding and responsibility in the next generation, and calling on all Baltimoreans to use Earth Day as an opportunity to contemplate how we can be better stewards of the environment we have inherited for our children and all future generations.

Recitals
  
   WHEREAS, the youth of our community are our most valuable resource and have the creativity and ability to seek feasible solutions to environmental challenges so that they, and future generations, can live in a healthy and sustainable manner.
 
  WHEREAS, environmental education encourages knowledge and understanding about environmental and economical challenges.
 
  WHEREAS, environmental education helps youth develop the necessary skills and expertise to address the environmental and economic challenges we face.
 
  WHEREAS, the sense of environmental responsibility reached through environmental knowledge acts as a catalyst for future participation in sustainable action.
 
  WHEREAS, the natural resources of the state and nation should be used wisely and with due consideration for the future, and the wise use of these resources should be the concern of government at the local, state, and national levels.
 
  WHEREAS, all people benefit from the natural resources of the state and nation: hence, they have citizenship responsibility in the safeguarding and judicious utilization of these resources.
 
  WHEREAS, each year, April 22, Earth Day, is set aside as a day of education on environmental issues.
 
 
  WHEREAS, Earth Day, celebrating its 45th anniversary in 2015, is the largest civic event in the world, celebrated simultaneously around the globe by people of all backgrounds, faiths and nationalities.
 
  WHEREAS, Earth Day�s focus on environmental action and education should be more than a one day event, but rather a catalyst for year-long efforts to raise awareness about how we can be better stewards of nature�s resources.
 
  NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF BALTIMORE, that the Council joins in the worldwide celebration of Earth Day on April 22, 2015, pledges to support all citizens and groups charged with the management of natural resources and education promoting environmental understanding and responsibility in the next generation, and calls on all Baltimoreans to use Earth Day as an opportunity to contemplate how we can be better stewards of the environment we have inherited for our children and all future generations.  
   
   AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be sent to the Mayor, the Youth Commission, the CEO of Baltimore City Public Schools, and the Mayor�s Legislative Liaison to the City Council.
