On May 28th, 2012, the Loyola Men's Lacrosse team completed an amazing season by winning the program's first NCAA Division I championship. This accomplishment capped an impressive year for Greyhounds' sports that also featured NCAA tournament appearances by their Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference champion Men's Basketball team, and their Big East champion Women's Lacrosse team.
Loyola's run to become only the 9th program to win a NCAA Division I lacrosse championship was historic in many ways. Starting the season ranked outside of the national top 20, the Greyhounds finished the season 18-1, with their lone loss coming to Charles Street rival Johns Hopkins. These 18 wins represent the most victories in program history, and the most wins ever by an NCAA Division I champion.
In the NCAA tournament itself, Loyola set a record for fewest goals allowed in a championship game; and Loyola's Eric Lusby, named the Championship's Most Outstanding Player, proved that the Greyhounds were superior on offense as well as defense by setting a tournament record for goals scored.
Coach Charley Toomey, who became the only coach to lead a team to a NCAA championship in his first trip to the semifinals, had an especially deep squad to work with. Besides Lusby, four additional Greyhounds were named to the All-Tournament Team - Josh Hawkins, Joe Fletcher, Scott Ratliff, and Jack Runkel. And many other players consistently contributed at key moments throughout the season.
In beating Maryland to bring the national lacrosse championship back to Baltimore for the 10th time since it was first awarded by the NCAA in 1971, Loyola has again asserted our city's and region's dominance in the fastest growing team sport in the United States. This is an accomplishment that the entire Loyola community, and all of Baltimore, can take great pride in.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF BALTIMORE, That the Council offers its congratulations to Loyola University Maryland and the Loyola Men's Lacrosse Team on their historic NCAA Division I Championship winning season.
AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be sent to the Loyola Men's Lacrosse team, the President of Loyola University Maryland, the Mayor, and the Mayor's Legislative Liaison to the City Council.
