A COUNCIL RESOLUTION concerning

Commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the Beatles appearing at the Baltimore Civic Center
FOR the purpose of commending the efforts of the Civic Commission for securing the performers who went on to change the social and popular culture of the times, making Baltimore City a part of that historic event; and Commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the Beatles appearing at the Baltimore Civic Center.

Recitals
WHEREAS, on September 13, 1814, the citizens of Baltimore took up arms against British Invaders and repelled them.
WHEREAS, on September 13, 1964, exactly One Hundred Fifty years later, the citizens of Baltimore opened their arms to welcome the “British Invasion” in Popular Music with the arrival of the Beatles: John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr, four lads from Liverpool, England, a port city much like ours.
WHEREAS, the Baltimore Civic Center was dedicated in 1963 with the commitment to bring to the citizens of Baltimore only the best in sports and entertainment.
WHEREAS, the members of the Civic Center Commission actively sought an appearance by this group of musicians who constituted a pop/rock phenomenon.
WHEREAS, the Beatles performed in only 23 cities during their second North American Tour, one of which was Baltimore, selected by the Fab Four because of the fine new auditorium available to their act.
WHEREAS, the Beatles did perform two shows at the Baltimore Civic Center on Sunday September 13, 1964 before 25,649 fans making our city the epicenter of Beatlemania that day .
WHEREAS, the Beatles went on to become legendary performers and musicians and the top musical group of all times.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF BALTIMORE, that the Council commends the efforts of the Civic Commission for securing the performers who went on to change the social and popular culture of the times, thus making Baltimore City a part of that historic event; and “Let It Be” further resolved that the Council celebrates the 50th Anniversary of the appearance of The Beatles: John, Paul, George, and Ringo at the Baltimore Civic Center.
AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be sent to the Mayor, the President and CEO of VISIT Baltimore, and the Mayor’s Legislative Liaison to the City Council.
