Al Kaline, nicknamed “Mr. Tiger”, is a former Major League Baseball right fielder, who played his entire 22-year baseball career with the Detroit Tigers. For most of his career, he played the outfield, where he won 10 Gold Gloves, was selected to play in 18 All-Star games, and reached the 3,000 hits milestone.
Baltimore can claim Al Kaline as one of its own. He was born and raised in Baltimore and was an outstanding pitcher in youth baseball. He graduated from Southern High School, where he earned all-state honors in baseball all four years. He joined the Detroit Tigers directly from high school, where he went on to have an outstanding career.
It would be fitting to honor this native son of Baltimore, by naming the baseball diamond in Swann Park, the Al Kaline Field.
Section 1. Be it ordained by the Mayor and City Council of Baltimore, That the baseball diamond, located in the southeast portion of Swann Park, 300 West McComas Street, is named the Al Kaline Field.
Section 2. And be it further ordained, That this Ordinance takes effect on the 30th day after the date it is enacted.
