March was designated as National Women's History Month by Joint Resolutions of the House and Senate and Proclamations by six American Presidents and is celebrated in thousands of schools, communities, and workplaces across the nation as well as on military bases throughout the world.

Each year National Women's History Month employs a unifying theme that honors women around the country whose work and lives testify to that theme.  Our History is Our Strength, the 2011 theme, invites local communities, organizations, and institutions to honor women within their own communities and organizations.

In proclaiming this years Women's History Month, the President of the United States remarked "During Women's History Month, we reflect on the extraordinary accomplishments of women and honor their role in shaping the course of our Nation's history.  Today women have reached heights their mothers and grandmothers might only have imagined.  Women now comprise nearly half of our work force and the majority of students in our colleges and universities.  They scale the skies as astronauts, expand our economy as business leaders, and serve our country at the highest levels of government and our Armed Forces.  In honor of the pioneering women who came before us, and in recognition of those who will come after us, this month we recommit to erasing the remaining inequities facing women today."

"As we reflect on the triumphs of the past, we must also look to the limitless potential that lies ahead.  Let us resolve to build on the progress won by the trailblazers of the past.  We must carry forward the work of the women who came before us and ensure our daughters have no limits on their dreams, no obstacles to their achievements, and no remaining ceilings to shatter."

The Baltimore City Council applauds the women of our City and State and recognizes their invaluable contributions to forming the backbone of our families, uniting our communities, sustaining our faith, and keeping our children in school.  We challenge all of Baltimore to commit to assisting our daughters to realize their best selves.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF BALTIMORE, That this Body celebrates Women's History Month, recognizes the extraordinary accomplishments of women, honors their role in the shaping of our families, our City, our State and our Nation, and endorses the theme, Our History is Our Strength, that honors women within local communities and organizations.

AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be sent to the Mayor, the Chair and Members of the Mayor's Commission on Women, and the Mayor's Legislative Liaison to the City Council.
