At the start of the 2005-2006 women's college basketball season, no one had the Maryland Lady Terrapins finishing in the top 10.  They said they were too young, lacked experience, and would not be able to hold their own with the better teams in the nation.  On April 4, 2006, the Lady Terrapins proved their critics wrong.  They not only brought home the NCAA Women's National Championship, but they did so in overtime, after closing one of the largest deficits in NCAA Women's Title Game history.  The Lady Terrapins showed poise and determination in the win, and Coach Brenda Frese did an excellent job of making sure her girls kept their heads in the game and never became overwhelmed by the 13 point deficit.

The Lady Terrapins defeated their division rival Duke Blue Devils, making the University of Maryland one of an elite four schools to win both men's and women's national titles.  Despite being one of the youngest teams in the tournament, with one of the youngest coaches, the Lady Terrapins proved to everyone that age is nothing more than a number and that heart can often have more value than experience.  The Lady Terrapins showed that they are a force to be reckoned with and will remain that way for years to come.

For their accomplishments on and off the court, the University of Maryland Lady Terrapins and their entire coaching staff deserve our respect, admiration, and congratulations from citizens of the State of Maryland and the City of Baltimore, and we look forward to bearing witness to their many future victories and achievements
