Cecil Elementary School #007, a neighborhood school serving 330 students in grades pre-kindergarten through grade 5, has again been honored with a National Blue School of Excellence designation.  Just this past January, students, parents, teachers, administrators, and community supporters were also justifiably proud when the school became the recipient of the Maryland Blue Ribbon School of Excellence Award.

The Blue Ribbon School of Excellence Awards are part of a state and national program that recognizes and honors public and private elementary, middle, and high schools that exhibit high performance and/or significant improvement in reading and mathematics as measured by Maryland academic assessment or are economically disadvantaged schools exceeding norms and dramatically closing achievement gaps of students in reading and mathematics.

In announcing the award of the Nation Blue School of Excellence to Cecil Elementary and 5 other Maryland schools, the State Superintendent of Education stated: “They exemplify high levels of achievement or dramatic improvement among economically disadvantaged students. They show everyone that we can close the achievement gap and raise the level of education in the state.”

The Governor added these words of praise: “As the nation’s third ranked public school system, we owe it to the students, teachers, and supporters of our public schools to provide the resources they need to succeed and to grow. The historic investments that, together, we have for Maryland’s schools have clearly paid off.  This national honor is not only well-deserved, but it is a direct result of the commitment demonstrated by an entire community that allows each student to succeed.”

The Baltimore City Council also commends the entire Cecil Elementary community on the achievement of this national recognition of their students’ educational progress and encourages all Baltimore City students to continue to pursue their educational and personal best.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF BALTIMORE, That this Body congratulates the students, teachers, and administrators of Cecil Elementary School on receiving the honor of being designated a 2008 National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence by the U.S. Department of Education, applauds the students and parents on their commitment to education and commends the teachers, para-professionals, and administrators for their continuing efforts in the pursuit of academic excellence.

AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be sent to the Mayor, the CEO of the Baltimore City Public School System, the Principal of Cecil Elementary School, the President of the Parent-Teacher Association of Cecil Elementary School, and the Mayor’s Legislative Liaison to the City Council.
