Body
Recitals
On Thursday, June 8, 2006, from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m., area Home Depot volunteers will converge on 611 North Montford Street for a Home Depot Day of Service in collaboration with NeighborWorks_ America and 5 Baltimore area nonprofit housing organizations: Neighborhood Housing Services of Baltimore, Inc., St. Ambrose Housing Aid Center, Banner Neighborhoods Community Corporation, Greater Baltimore AHC, Inc., and the Mutual Housing Association of Baltimore.
At the close of their volunteer service on Thursday evening, the volunteers will have brought the residents of McElderly Park 600 man hours closer to having their much anticipated Community Center and the accompanying Amazing Port Street's Sacred Commons available for the enjoyment of their family, friends, neighborhood residents, and visitors.
The national NeighborWorks_ network is an affiliation of more than 240 nonprofit organizations increasing homeownership, preserving affordable housing, and revitalizing neighborhoods in more than 4,414 communities across the nation. In 2005, the NeighborWorks network generated more than $2.9 million in total direct investment and helped more than 180,000 low-to moderate-income families purchase, improve, and maintain their homes.
Our local NeighborWorks members are part of a national network that was founded and supported by Neighborhood Reinvestment Corporation, now NeighborWorks_ America, and chartered by Congress in 1978. National NeighborWorks_ Week was initiated, in 1984, by a Congressional Resolution cosponsored by more than 240 members of Congress and signed by the President. The formal introduction of NeighborWorks_ Week occurred in the spring of 1986, and began an annual, national celebration of neighborhood pride and unity held the 1st through the 2nd Saturday in June.
The parent organization strengthens the network through training, technical assistance, and funding. National NeighborWorks_ Weeks celebrates the efforts of local organizations working with partners and volunteers to create healthier communities and gives people a chance to be a positive force in their communities by participating in activities that may include helping to spruce up a block, showcasing new homes provided for 1st time buyers, or generating support for crime prevention programs.
NeighborWorks_ Weeks personifies the best definition of being "a good neighbor".
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF BALTIMORE, That this Body celebrates the 23rd National NeighborWorks_ Week that is held annually the 1st through the 2nd Saturday in June, in recognition of the accomplishments of the NeighborWorks_ network working in more that 4,414 urban, suburban, and rural communities across the nation to transform distressed neighborhoods.
AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be sent to the Mayor, the Baltimore Area NeighborWorks_ Week Coordinator, the Commissioner of Housing, the Director of Planning, and the Mayor's Legislative Liaison to the City Council.
