House Bill 157, which requires the Governor to annually proclaim March 8 as Maryland Women's History Day, is of particular import to the City of Baltimore, proud home to the Maryland Women's Heritage Center, the first comprehensive state-based center and museum of it s kind in the United States.

The Maryland Women's Heritage Center, located at 39 West Lexington Street in downtown Baltimore, was established to preserve the past, understand the present, and shape the future by recognizing, respecting, and transmitting the experiences and contributions of Maryland women and girls of diverse backgrounds and regions.

Our History is Our Strength, the 2011 theme of the National Women's History Project, reminds us that "the stories of women's achievements are integral to the fabric of our history. Learning about women's tenacity, courage, and creativity throughout the centuries is a tremendous source of strength.  Until relatively recently, this sphere of women's history was overlooked and undervalued.  Women's achievements were often distorted, disdained, and denied.  But knowing women's stories provides essential role models for everyone.  And role models are genuinely needed to face the extraordinary changes and unrelenting challenges of the 21st century."

The Council Resolution, In Celebration of National Women's History Month 2020, a celebration of the day as well as the opening of the Women's Heritage Center, endorsed the Executive Director's goal of overcoming the historic omission that has resulted in women's extraordinary accomplishments being largely invisible and applauded the fact that the Maryland Women's Heritage Center will make history complete by living up to the motto: Adding herstory to history to tell ourstory, so everyone is included.

Designating March 8 each year as Maryland Women's History Day pays fitting homage to our Maryland heroines, past and present, sung and unsung alike.

SECTION 2.  AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be sent to the Mayor, the Governor, the Chair and Members of the House Health and Government Operations Committee, the Chairs and Members of the Baltimore City Senate and House Delegations to the 2011 Maryland General Assembly, the Board and Members of the Maryland Women's Heritage Center, the Executive Director of the Mayor's Office of State Relations, and the Mayor's Legislative Liaison to the City Council.
