In 2010, in celebration of the 30th Anniversary, the National Women's History Project will be using Writing Women Back Into History as the overarching theme, as well as highlighting themes from previous years, each of which recognizes a different aspect of women's achievements from ecology to art and from sports to politics.

This spring, Baltimore will be the first in the nation to open the doors to a center that is devoted to women, who are more than half of the state's adult population.  The Maryland Women's Heritage Center and Museum that will open downtown on West Lexington Street will provide a community forum to recognize stories of achievements by Maryland women - from Harriet Tubman to Rachel Carson to Marin Alsop.

The Center's Executive Director states that the Center will overcome the historic omission that has resulted in women's extraordinary accomplishments being largely invisible.  The Maryland Women's Heritage Center and Museum, an outgrowth of the Maryland Women's History Project, will make history complete by living up to the motto: "Adding herstory to history to tell ourstory, so everyone is included."

The Presidential proclamation on Women's History Month 2010 requests of the American people: " This month, let us carry forth the legacy of our mothers and grandmothers. As we honor the women who have shaped our Nation, we must remember that we are tasked with writing the next chapter of women's history. Only if we teach our daughters that no obstacle is too great for them, that no ceiling can block their ascent, will we inspire them to reach for their highest aspirations and achieve true equality."

The Speaker of the House's comments speak in part, to the contributions of 'everywomen': "During Women's History Month we remember the trailblazers who reached for the ballot, demanded equal rights, and paved the path for progress.  Yet we also recall the silent heroes of our history - the women who pay the bills, take their kids to school, and bring home a paycheck in this challenging economy without accolades or recognition. Everyday they inspire us to act."

We, in Baltimore City, also honor the giants of American history as we pay particular homage to those women of every race, class, and ethnic background who have made countless selfless contributions in unrecorded, undocumented, and unremarked ways.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF BALTIMORE, That this Body celebrates National Women's History Month on the 30th anniversary of the Presidential Proclamation declaring the week of March 8, 1980 as the first National Women's History Week, acknowledges the historic economic, cultural, and social achievements of women worldwide, and expresses appreciation to the women in our lives for the daily selfless contributions they make to promote and maintain the economic, social, and emotional fabric of our families.

AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be sent to the Mayor, the Honorable Members of the Maryland Delegation to the111th Congress, the Honorable Members of the Baltimore City Senate and House Delegations to the 2010 Session of the Maryland General Assembly, the Chair and Members of the Maryland Commission for Women, the Chair and Members of the Baltimore Commission for Women, the Executive Director of the Maryland Women's Heritage Center and Museum, the President and Members of the Maryland Women's History Project, and the Mayor's Legislative Liaison to the City Council.
