      Recitals

On September 15, 2011, the U.S. Secretary of Education announced the 2011 National Blue Ribbon Schools.  Mount Washington Elementary/Middle is one of 305 public and private schools across the country to receive the honor, which the CEO of Baltimore City Public Schools states: "recognizes the consistently high performance of Mount Washington's students and the highest possible expectations by Principal Torr, her teachers and staff, and the entire school community."

The U.S. Department of Education's Blue Ribbon Program honors public and private schools that demonstrate sustained academic excellence or dramatic student achievement gains among disadvantaged students.  Principal Torr said of her school's achievement: "This award is a reflection first and foremost of the hard work of Mount Washington's students, followed by our talented, dedicated teachers and our supportive, involved parents and community.  This prestigious award is an honor and a thrill."

Mount Washington, which has consistently produced high scores on the Maryland School Assessment in both reading and math in recent years, was named a Maryland Blue Ribbon School in December 2010, before being nominated for the national honor.  This fall the long-time elementary school expanded to include middle grades to provide Mount Washington School families, for the first time, with an excellent middle school program within the neighborhood.

The Mission Statement of the expanded institution aptly reads: "The Mount Washington School prepares children to succeed in the local and global community by challenging all students to strive for academic excellence, to contribute to the development of strong, positive communities, and to become caring, responsible citizens."

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF BALTIMORE, That this Body congratulates the students, teachers, and administrators of Mount Washington Elementary/Middle School on being named a 2011 National Blue Ribbon School in recognition of the academic excellence and major student achievement gains this year, and recognizes the important contributions of the entire supportive parent and Mount Washington community to the success of the school.

AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be sent the Mayor, the CEO of Baltimore City Public Schools, the Principal of Mount Washington Elementary/Middle School, the President and Members of the Mount Washington Elementary/Middle Parent-Teacher Organization, and the Mayor's Legislative Liaison to the City Council.
