On October 27, 2007, Sam's Club announced that Brad Nornhold, an 8th grade algebra teacher at KIPP Ujima Village Academy, was named Teacher of the Year in Maryland.  Mr. Nornhold was honored at a special surprise ceremony at the school located at 4701 Greenspring Avenue, and in his honor the school received a $10,000 educational grant from the Wal-Mart Foundation.

In awarding the honor, the Timonium Sam's Club store manager stated that the Wal-Mart and Sam's Club 12th annual State Teacher of the Year program was created to recognize those teachers who go the extra mile for their students and instill a love of learning long after graduation and noted that Mr. Nornhold also had been honored as the local Teacher of the Year winner the previous May.

The Wal-Mart media release notes that "the cycle of poverty and educational challenges Park Heights students face are no match for Nornhold's passion and commitment to instilling in his students a strong work ethic and belief that they are capable of greatness.  Mr. Nornhold has transformed his students into some of the brightest and most elite eighth grade students in Maryland", and the Dean of Instruction at the Academy, who initially nominated him, described him as an "unparalleled educator, a phenomenal and magical teacher as well as an invaluable team player, leader, and role model for all of those around him.".

Wal-Mart's Teacher of the Year program, that partners with Phi Delta Kappa International, a professional education association, is one of the largest teacher recognition efforts in the country and began in 1995.  Since that time, nearly 30,000 teachers have been honored - Brad Nornhold is a worthy recipient of the 2007 local and state Teacher of the Year in Maryland award.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF BALTIMORE, That this Body congratulates Brad Nornhold on being named Sam's Club Teacher of the Year in Maryland and commends him for bringing country-wide recognition of the teacher and student excellence that prevails at the KIPP Ujima Village Academy in Baltimore City.

AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be sent to Mr. Brad Nornhold, the Mayor, the CEO, Baltimore City Public School System, the Principal and Dean of Instruction of the KIPP Ujima Academy, and the Mayor's Legislative Liaison to the City Council.
