Body

                     Recitals

In 2003, a dedicated group of local design and construction professionals joined together to educate the citizens of Baltimore City about the growing need for green buildings, architecture, design, and development.  Scientists, environmentalists, community members, and public officials soon joined and provided new perspectives of the impact of sustainable design on the environment and health of our communities.  From this collaboration grew Baltimore Green Week (BGW), an organization committed to organizing annual weeklong programs comprising community events, hands-on activities, forums and lectures throughout the City highlighting and promoting a sustainable lifestyle for Baltimore City and its citizens.

BGW represents an exciting coalition of private corporations, professional associations, citizen groups, governmental bodies, and corporate sponsors.  This year marks the third year of BGW, and it remains a volunteer-driven event providing public forums for the dissemination of ideas and solutions addressing economic development, public health, housing, energy use, and water quality problems through the promotion of sustainable lifestyles and practices.  This year's events include the following:

EcoFestival, in celebration of Earth Day, on Saturday, April 22, from 12 noon to 5 p.m., in celebration of Earth Day at Middle Branch Park, where earth-friendly and environmental groups will participate with demonstrations, exhibits, local food, music and family activities.  The goal is to reduce and recycle all of the waste generated; recycling stations will be provided to help sort the various waste streams for further processing and reclamation;

An Environmental Film Night on Sunday, April 23, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. where the Japanese anime film Princess Mononoke by Hayo Miyazaki will be shown at the Creative Alliance, telling the story of man's relationship to the environment and what can be done to preserve it;

                      A "Delectably Green" event at Gertrude's at the BMA on Monday, April 24, 2006, from 10 a.m. to noon in commemoration of Food Day 2006, focusing on creating connections between local producers and local purchasers. This will be followed by talk and cooking demonstrations at the Lovely Lane Church at 5 p.m.  'Food Is Elementary' is a unique curriculum integrating academic disciplines with food, nutrition, culture and the arts;

Events focus on "Getting a Return on Green" on Tuesday, April 25, 2006, with an evening panel discussion at the Enoch Pratt Library at 7 p.m., on incorporating social and environmental values into investing strategies;

The day begins with a discussion of the USGBC's LEED for Homes program at 12 p.m on Wednesday, April 26, 2006.  There will be a talk given at 6 p.m. at the MD Institute College of Art on how suburbs can reinvent themselves as stable communities that are economically competitive, socially vital, and fiscally sound;

A press conference and presentation on the Final Report of the Baltimore City Green Building Task Force, will be premiered at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 26, 2006, a day dedicated to "Laying the Foundation for Green Living through Green Building,"  This will be followed by a seminar on Energy Efficiency for the Homeowner.

An Environmental Policy Roundtable hosted by the Maryland League for Conservation Voters on Thursday, April 27, 2006, from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., featuring candidates for the 3rd U.S. Congressional District seat;

A "Green Works, Green Jobs" Education forum on Friday, April 28, 2006, featuring speakers describing their work and programs to high school seniors and A Green Happy Hour at Max's on Broadway in Fells Point on Friday, April 28, for an end of Baltimore Green Week 2006 celebration with food and friends.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF BALTIMORE, That the week of April 22 through April 28 2006, be declared Baltimore Green Week 2006 to continue to encourage the development of initiatives for Baltimore City, which can help Baltimore become cleaner and environmentally safer for all who live and work in the region, especially our children, whose futures are being invested in through the promotion of sustainable lifestyles now.
