A COUNCIL RESOLUTION concerning

Request for State Legislation - Parking Near Hydrants

FOR the purpose of respectfully urging the Honorable Chairs and Members of the Baltimore City Senate and House Delegations to the 2011 Session of the Maryland General Assembly to sponsor and secure the adoption of legislation enabling Baltimore City to reduce the area in which parking is prohibited surrounding a fire hydrant from 30 feet to 20 feet.

WHEREAS, many Baltimore neighborhoods suffer from an extreme shortage of on-street parking, which adversely impacts quality of life for neighborhood residents.

WHEREAS, in the 2010 Baltimore City Citizen Survey, 78 percent of residents reported that parking in commercial areas was at least a moderate problem, with a quarter of residents believing it to be very serious, making it more difficult for local businesses to attract and retain customers.

WHEREAS, cities such as Minneapolis, Boston, and Denver require that only 20 feet be restricted surrounding fire hydrants, and New York City is considering reducing its requirement from 30 feet to 20 feet in order to create additional parking spaces.

WHEREAS, reducing this requirement could create additional parking in blocks containing a fire hydrant.
